Eldepryl prescription: This medication is used to treat Parkinson''s disease. It is used along with levodopa or levodopa/carbidopa to make it more effective. Take this medication as prescribed. Do not increase your dose or take it more often than directed. It may take a few weeks for the full benefits of the drug to be noticed. This drug should not be used with the following medications because very serious interactions may occur: apraclonidine, brimonidine, bethanidine, bupropion, buspirone, carbamazepine, dextromethorphan, entacapone, herbal products (e.g., ma huang), indoramin, meperidine, papaverine, sibutramine, SSRI antidepressants (e.g., fluoxetine, citalopram), sympathomimetics (e.g., methylphenidate, ephedrine), tolcapone, tricyclic antidepressants (e.g., amitriptyline, doxepin), 'triptans' (e.g., sumatriptan, zolmitriptan). If you are currently using any of these medications, tell your doctor or pharmacist before starting selegiline. Why is this drug prescribed?
Eldepryl tablets and syrup contain the active ingredient selegiline hydrochloride, which is a type of drug called a selective monoamine-oxidase-B inhibitor. Selegiline is also available without a brand name, ie as the generic drug. Selegiline increases the levels of a substance in the brain called dopamine, and is used in the treatment of Parkinson's disease.
Dopamine is a substance known as a neurotransmitter. Neurotransmitters are present in the brain and nervous system and are involved in transmitting messages between nerves. The neurotransmitter dopamine is known to be reduced or absent in the brains of people with Parkinson's disease, and this is thought to be the cause of the disease symptoms. Natural dopamine released from nerve cells in the brain is normally broken down by an enzyme called monoamine-oxidase-B. Selegiline works by blocking the action of this enzyme, which prevents the monoamine-oxidase-B from breaking down the dopamine. This results in an increased amount of active dopamine in the brain, and this reduces the symptoms of Parkinson's disease.
