Abilify prescription: Aripiprazole is an anti-psychotic drug for treating psychoses. Like other anti-psychotic drugs, the mechanism of action of aripiprazole is unknown. Moreover, like other anti-psychotics, it blocks several receptors on the nerves of the brain for several neurotransmitters (chemicals that nerves use to communicate with each other). It is thought that its beneficial effect is due to its effects on dopamine and serotonin receptors. Its effects on these receptors are complex, involving stimulation of the receptors but to a lesser degree than the naturally-occurring neurotransmitters (a process called partial agonism). Aripiprazole is used to treat severe mental disorders (psychoses) like schizophrenia, which are characterized by distorted thoughts, perceptions, and emotions. Some of the most common side effects associated with aripiprazole are anxiety, blurred vision, constipation, cough, headache, insomnia, light-headedness, nausea, rash, restlessness, runny nose, sleepiness, tremors, vomiting, weakness, and weight gain. As with other anti-psychotics, long-term use of aripiprazole may lead to a potentially irreversible condition called tardive dyskinesia (involuntary movements of the jaw, lips, and tongue).
Abilify use: Abilify is used in the treatment of schizophrenia, the psychological disorder that causes its victims to lose touch with reality, often triggering hallucinations, delusions (false beliefs), and disorganized thinking. The drug is thought to work by modifying sensitivity to two of the brain's chief chemical messengers, serotonin and dopamine.

The use of Abilify, in the treatment of schizophrenia, will aid physicians, psychiatrists and patients to improve the schizophrenia symptoms and, thereby, improve daily living activities.
Abilify, in the treatment of schizophrenia, is not indicated for all patients. For patients suffer from pre-existing cardiac conditions, kidney disease, liver disease, breast cancer or diabetes Abilify may not be the first line of therapy in the treatment of schizophrenia symptoms. Specifically, in patients with diabetes, or a family history of diabetes, Abilify may adjust the blood sugar level to such an extent so as to create a hypoglycemia condition. In pregnancy, Abilify is a Category C drug meaning the extent to which the drug creates birth defects is not known. As a result, Abilify is not recommended as a first line of schizophrenia treatment in pregnant women.
Dosing of Abilify is quite easy with schizophrenia treatment provided as a one pill option. Recommended for no more than six consecutive weeks, Abilify can be used any time of the day and should be taken with a full glass of water. The dosing level, in one pill, will vary depending on the individual's health status and extent of schizophrenia symptoms. For individuals unable to swallow pills, Abilify is available as a liquid as well.

Why is this drug prescribed?

Abilify tablets, orodispersible tablets and oral solution all contain the active ingredient aripiprazole, which is a type of drug known as an atypical antipsychotic. It is used to treat schizophrenia. The way in which aripiprazole works is not fully understood, however, it does work in a slightly different way to other antipsychotic drugs. Aripiprazole works by acting on various receptors in the brain, particularly dopamine receptors and serotonin receptors. Dopamine and serotonin are natural compounds called neurotransmitters, and are involved in transmitting messages between brain cells. Psychotic illness is considered to be caused by disturbances in the activity of neurotransmitters in the brain. Aripiprazole is thought to work mainly by stabilising the dopamine activity in the brain. People with schizophrenia may experience 'positive symptoms' and 'negative symptoms'. The positive symptoms are thought to be due to overactivity of dopamine in certain areas of the brain. Aripiprazole blocks the dopamine receptors in these areas and so prevents the overactivity. This helps control the positive symptoms of the disease. The negative symptoms, as well as cognitive symptoms such as memory loss and poor attention, are considered to be due to underactivity of dopamine in other areas of the brain. In these areas, aripiprazole stimulates the dopamine receptors. This mimics the activity of dopamine in these areas of the brain and so improves their activity. This helps improve the negative and cognitive symptoms of this illness. Abilify orodispersible tablets and oral solution can be used as an alternative to the standard tablets for people who have difficulty swallowing. The orodispersible tablets are designed to dissolve on the tongue in the saliva without the need for a drink of water. These tablets are fragile and should be taken as soon as they are removed from the blister packet. Alternatively, these tablets can be dispersed in a glass of water.
